Description
Soft Caress Mahonia (Mahonia eurybracteata ‘Soft Caress’ PP20183), from the Southern Living Plant Collection is a proven garden standout that is very versatile in landscapes and container gardens. This dwarf Mahonia features a compact habit feathery soft bamboo-like evergreen foliage, which is a big departure from traditional leatherleaf mahonia that have sharp spines on their leaves. In early Winter this Mahonia flowers with sprays of bright-yellow blooms that will bring a splash of color to the dreary Winter landscape. Soft Cares is a great selection for a cottage, Asian, woodland, and contemporary-style gardens. This Mahonia plant should be planted in an area that will receive part shade to shade as an accent, specimen, low border, or in mass plantings. This is one of our favorite solutions for the question: “Do you have any evergreen plants for foundation plantings for shade?”. If you live in USDA zone 7-9 (Hardy to 0°F to 10°F), the first recommendation will always be – Soft Caress Mahonia. ***If you live in an area below USDA zone 7 this plant should be planted in an area that can be protected from harsh winter weather or in container gardens that can be moved indoors during the Winter.- Few plants offer the texture that ‘Soft Caress’ Mahonia provides the shade garden. In early winter, bright-yellow flowers stand atop the slender, bamboo-like foliage like fingers of light.
